Die indianische Frau, eine Squaw, war vor dem Einzug der heutigen Moderne über viele Jahrhunderte hinweg fast ausschließlich mit der Versorgung der Kinder und der Behausung betraut gewesen. Um die Kinder bei sich zu tragen, haben die Indianer eine eigene Rückentrage erfunden. So konnte das Kind bei der täglichen Arbeit aber auch auf Wanderungen des Stammes in neue Jagdgründe immer nah bei der Mutter sein.
